Growing Up Social Book Review and Giveaway!

Growing up Social giveaway

It’s no surprise to anyone when I say we are a VERY social family, both online and offline. We LOVE our social media. Both our careers depend on it. All of our kids do a majority of their homework online, communicate with other and teachers online. On busy weeks, I even order and have our groceries delivered through an online delivery service. It seems we’ve become quite accustomed to our online life. In fact, our younger children have never known life to be any different.

While our kids may not have ever known a life before screen time, most parents have. Teaching our children proper social skills both online and offline is new parenting territory. Navigating between face time and face to face time can be confusing for kids( and even some adults!). Anybody else need a little help with knowing how to model and teach this?

Don’t misunderstand I am not a technology hater by any stretch of the imagination. I’m all for utilizing technology to help us be more efficient and I love how it allows us to stay connected, even across the world. I just realize how easy it is to allow ourselves,  as well as our kids, to engage in mindless screen time.  I was excited to have the opportunity to review the book “Growing Up Social” by authors Gary Chapman and Arelene Pellicane recently.  Gary Chapman is the author of another one of my all time favorite books The 5 Love Languages, so I knew this would be an excellent book.

Growing Up Social

In Growing Up Social, Gary Chapman and Arlene Pellicane give parents the necessary tools to access the screen time in your home and make positive changes…starting today. Through stories, wit, and wisdom, you discover how to make sure your home doesn’t suffer from an over dependence on screens. You’ll also learn to teach the five A+ skills that every healthy child needs to master: affection, appreciation, anger management, apology, and attention.

•Equip your child to be relationally rich in a digital world
•Replace mindless screen time with meaningful family time
•Establish simple boundaries that make a huge difference
•Discover what’s working for families that have become screen savvy
•Learn healthy ways to occupy your child while you get things done

Equip your child to live with screen time, not for screen time. No phone, tablet, or gaming device can teach your child how to have healthy relationships the way a parent can.

Making Every Day a Dawn Destinations Getaway #MyDawnSummer

This review was made possible by Double Duty Divas and Dawn. I was provided the featured product free of charge to facilitate my review, as always all opinions are 100% mine
 Dawn Destinations New Zealand

After returning home from a fun and super relaxing beach vacation last week, getting back into the daily grind seemed a little more than…..well, underwhelming. I really was wishing for just 100 1 more day before we were torn away from the smell of salt water and the crashing sounds of ocean waves. I missed watching the tide roll in and feeling sand between my toes while we looked for shells. I was so pitiful my husband started teasing  me even saying he thought I may have developed post-vacation depression.

This summer was going to be a long one if I didn’t find a way to snap out of it- and soon!  I decided to find some simple ways to make each day of summer a little bit more like our relaxing vacation. Challenge accepted! First stop on our tour, we’re off to the kitchen to tackle Mt. Dishmore.

Making Every Day a Dawn Destinations Getaway

Setting up my “at-home-vacation-workstation” was my first task. Near the sink, I placed one of my favorite beach vacation pictures, a little sand and a few shells from our trip, and a bottle of Dawn Destinations. We always use Dawn on our dishes because of its powerful grease cutting  ability. I was happy to see Dawn Destinations delivered the same grease-cleaning  results I expected in new relaxing scents.

Dawn grease cutting power

The pleasant scent of Dawn New Zealand Springs reminded me of the clear fresh vacation waters I had been missing. Even though I was doing dishes in my own kitchen, I found myself  a bit more calm and relaxed. (I may also have benefited from the lack of “Mooom, I’mmm bored” that pause when chores are being done.)

The moral of this story? Remember to breathe deep. Seek out simple, everyday moments to stay balanced and centered,  even if it is escaping at the sink with the exotic scents of Dawn Destinations.

Before I knew it the dishes were done and I was ready to relax and rest for night.

Since I tend to carry a lot of stress in my shoulders and neck, a warm aromatherapy pillow on these muscles before bed really helps them to relax and I sleep much more soundly.  This is a simple and inexpensive DIY project you can make for yourself or someone else as a gift.

Dawn Destinations DIY AROMATHERAPY Pillow

You will need:

  • A tube sock
  • A mini sewing kit
  • 8-10 oz of dry rice
  • Lavender oil

  1. Fill the tube sock with the dry rice so that is about two-thirds to three-quarters full
  2. Add 15-20 drops of lavender oil
  3. Carefully sew the sock shut so that the rice does not fall out
  4. Microwave and apply as needed to help relieve neck and shoulder tension

Ready to experience Dawn Destinations for yourself??

One of my lucky readers will win a Dawn Destinations Gift pack to create a relaxing “getaway” in their own home! Enter below and make sure to follow Dawn on Facebook and Twitter for the latest products and news!

American Girl Doll & Book Giveaway!! Ends 4/30

Our American Girl story began a little over a year ago, when our youngest daughter began saving to buy her first American girl doll.  It took a birthday and several weeks of chores but she did it. We drove to the American Girl Store at the Galleria to shop for a doll that looked just like her. She named her Lily. During our visit, we also made a stop at the American Girl Salon and got Lily’s ears pierced too! Kaitlyn was so proud of her accomplishment and has taken great care of her American Girl Doll every day since.
  American Girl Doll Lily

I have been so impressed with the quality of American Girl and the positive images that they promote for girls of all ages and interests.

American Girl characters past and present show girls today that they can do great things if they believe in themselves and each other. From a Native American girl living in the Northwest in 1764 to a contemporary girl whose passions inspire action, the characters in every story illustrate the power of determination, imagination, courage, and hope—the same spirit that inspires modern American girls.

I’ve teamed up with a few other great bloggers to giveaway an American Doll +Book to a lucky winner!
