Our “Welcome to Summer” Party

The last week of school is always filled with so much excitement and fun things that when the last day ( usually a half day) rolls around it can be kind of  disappointing that it’s all over. In fact, one of our children almost always tears up walking to the car on the last day. She already misses her teachers, friends, and even homework. To remedy this, Randy and I have started throwing our kids a “Welcome to Summer” party on the last day of the school year!
Welcome to summer party

A “Welcome to Summer” party is  a lot of fun to throw together and doesn’t take a ton of time. You can make it as big or small as you like. Ours is different every year and is usually coordinated with an activity we will be doing over the summer. In a previous year, we had a zoo themed Welcome to Summer party and presented the kids with passes to visit the zoo.  Another year, it was an art themed party with special art supplies and museum membership for the family.

We are taking a family vacation to the beach in a few weeks. So it seemed appropriate that this years party would be completely beach themed. You can always find inexpensive beach party items at your local dollar store this time of year.

I also made up gift baskets for each child to open. These baskets were filled with summer essentials such as sunscreen, new beach towels, sunglasses, flip-flops, pool toys, and a new water bottle. Most of these were items that I had planned to purchase for our beach trip anyway but it was the presentation that added to the excitement.

After that, I had a beach backdrop pinned up and some beach props gathered together for a fun photo booth. We had a lot of fun with that too!Welcome Summer photo booth 1

We also celebrated our Welcome To Summer party by enjoying some fun treats. We put umbrellas on top of tropical fruit sorbet served in pineapple halves, coconut shells, lemon and orange halves.  Everyone was so excited for these I barely got to snap a picture. It made for a special treat that really made the day something to celebrate!

Our “Welcome to Summer” parties are always a lot of fun for our family. Do you have a special way that you celebrate the end of the school year?

  1. I usually just take my kids out for ice cream to celebrate the end of school, not the beginning of summer 😉
