Pink Petals & Patriotism! Waxahachie Texas Fireworks, Parade and Event info

Waxahachie Fireworks and 4th of July events

It’s no secret that we LOVE our city. Fourth of July is one of our favorite times of year here because the city shows out in a big way to celebrate. There is nothing like hearing the Oooohs and Ahhh’s at the firework display and waving to all those parading down Main Street.  Wanna come celebrate with us?  Here’s all the info you need.

Pink Petals & Patriotism! Waxahachie Texas Fireworks, Parade and Event info

Join the city of Waxahachie for a flower-filled 4th of July celebration with crape myrtles in full bloom during the 17th Annual Crape Myrtle Festival and Parade.   The theme for this year’s festival is Pink Petals & Patriotism.

The patriotic celebration will begin on Thursday, July 3, at 5 p.m. with the Vintage Bank Tailgate Party at the Waxahachie Sports Complex on Broadhead Rd. This year, guests will enjoy a concert by Escape – the Dallas Journey Tribute Band at 7 p.m. sponsored by Carlisle Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac.

Following the concert will be the spectacular H-E-B fireworks display at 9 p.m. Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and their barbecue grill to cookout. Other festivities include a children’s area, food vendors and more.

On July 4, the celebration will continue at 10 a.m. with a hometown parade. The parade will start at College Street, head west on Main Street and end in Getzendaner Park.

After the parade, Remedy Church will host a Picnic in the Park in Getzendaner Park for families along with free hotdogs, water, old-fashioned games and bounce house.
In 1997, the Texas State Legislature designated Waxahachie as the “Crape Myrtle Capital of Texas.” Each summer, the city’s historic streets are lined with hundreds of beautiful pink crape myrtles in full bloom.

The Crape Myrtle Festival and Parade are FREE to the public. Other sponsors include the Crape Myrtle Council, the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce and the City of Waxahachie.”

My Maleficent Movie Review

The long anticipated opening weekend of Disney’s Maleficent is finally here!!! Critics from around the globe have been weighing in. All that’s left is for you to do is buy your own Maleficent tickets from the box office.

But is Maleficent everything the trailers have portrayed it to be? Is it Family Friendly or Frightening?  Earlier this week, I was able to attend a screening of Maleficent to be able to share my personal movie review with you.

Maleficent’s Story

Without the inclusion of any spoilers, Let’s start off with a little description of the movie’s story line. Extracted from the classic Disney story of “Sleeping Beauty”, this film goes back in time to give us full insight into the life of Maleficent. We are allowed a peek at the darkness that took root and grew in heart, before she came to bestow the curse on Princess Aurora. This fairy tale version is instead told from the perspective of Maleficent, giving us the rest of the story. After all, every good story has two sides, right?

After seeing the trailer months prior, I was more than excited when screening day finally arrived! I had heard great things but like many of you had doubts about whether I wanted to bring my children to the theater for this one. First off, this film is perfectly cast.  Angelina Jolie steals the show as Maleficent. She is strong, stunning, and even in scenes with minimal dialogue she is able to convey so much emotion with a just glance.

We fall in love with Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora. Sharlto Copley, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville are equally amazing in their roles.  Our screening was shown in 3-D . The 3-D effects lend a great element to viewing experience. If you have the option, I highly recommend watching it in this format.

I absolutely LOVED this movie!! My husband and I talked about the themes and messages taken from each character on and off for a couple of days after seeing it. Disney’s character development in this movie was unparalleled to any movie in years. That alone is a reason to see it this weekend. Come to the theater prepared, this movie will lead you through a series of emotions. The action scenes will leave you on the edge of your seat. You will find yourself empathizing with a villain and wondering if she is instead a heroine.  Every scene in the movie is filled with great intensity and emotion sometimes its love and splendor, other times its anger and bitterness.

Which brings me to the question every parent is asking….

“Should I bring my child to see Maleficent?”

I can guide you best by telling you this question is best answered by you as their parent.  The movie has been given a PG movie rating. I left the screening immediately planning to take my teenagers opening weekend. As much as I loved the movie myself, I still had hesitation about taking our 8 and 10 yr old. I know my own children. I knew they would empathize with the hurt and pain of portrayed in some of the scenes and because of their compassionate hearts would leave the theater somewhat sad. I also knew the intensity of some of the scenes could startle them. Ultimately, we decided to wait until later for them to see this movie.

In the same way, you know your children and are the best judge of what they should see regardless of a movie rating. Watch the trailer above or better yet go see Maleficent in its entirety before deciding. We do this often with new movies. If you decide it is something they would love, I can promise you will not regret going back to watch it again.

Have you seen Maleficent yet? What were your thoughts?

Disclosure: I received complimentary tickets to preview this movie. All opinions are 100% honest and my own.
